So, I just want to get opinions on this:

Which antivirus is the best: Avast, AntiVir or Nod32? Or do you chaps have a better idea?

Also, what would you recommend to use as an anti-spyware program?

I haven't really used anything other than AVG which I haven't had a problem with.  However, from what I've heard, antivir is pretty decent and so is Nod32, haven't really heard much about avast, but then again I haven't really heard about much about them as a whole since I mostly just stuck to AVG for when I'm in my windows partition, and most of the time I'm in OSX anyways, so it doesn't particularly matter.

nod32

if you need an anti-spyware program best way to keep your computer spyware free would be to get yourself a guest account and remove all privileges.

I USE Q'S INSTEQD OF Q'S

Retired IT guy.

For desktop, laptop, I use, in addition to Defender, Paid MalwareBytes (3 computer version). MWB often alerts on malicious sites. I go lots of places chasing the little rabbits.

For my wife's portable, it's Defender, MalwareBytes (1 of 3), and paid Avast. She's very good about taking her hands off the keyboard and hollering at me if things are not exactly as she expected. She knows not to click on links she didn't specifically ask for in emails.

I've taught her all I know about phishing and stuff.

I agree that Defender alone is all that's probably necessary, but my career has taught me to be overly cautious. Therefore i am using paid Avast and malwarebytes both together. You can see the comparison here https://www.reviewse...ender-vs-avast/ that Avast and malwarebytes both cover different ground of protection in few cases so it is good to have both of them.

The other part about protection is backup. If you're not backing it up, you're OK with losing it.

In addition to regular, daily, backup I do a monthly (or whenever I get queasy) backup to a drive and then disconnect it.

The right kind of malicious attack can jump from a desktop to attached hard drives.
