After nearly 13 years of development time, Duke Nukem Forever is finally complete.

The game was on display at the Penny Arcade Expo this weekend in Seattle. Texas-based Gearbox Software confirmed they finished development of the title. Studio president Randy Pitchford said during a presentation the game is in the final polishing stages, and is coming in 2011 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. It will have a single-player campaign and competitive multiplayer.

"We couldn't let the Duke die," Pitchford told the crowd.

First announced in 1997, Duke Nukem Forever was originally planned as a sequel to the 1996 hit Duke Nukem 3D. Since then, however, the game has famously suffered from continuous development delays, leading many to wonder if Duke would ever see the light of day.

For nearly a decade not much was seen or heard about the project until things began to heat up in May 2009 when rumors surfaced of 3D Realms' closure. That same month, publisher Take-Two filed a lawsuit against 3D Realms/Apogee Ltd for breach of contract.

Studio co-founder George Broussard soon spoke out saying that due to a lack of funding the Duke Nukem Forever team was let go, but 3D Realms would remain open in a much smaller capacity. A courtersuit claim was filed against Take-Two a month later.

The lawsuit and countersuit were finally settled this past June, paving the way for the game to be released. Duke Nukem Forever again made headlines last month when rumors began that Gearbox Software had taken over control of the game.

IGN is on the show floor playing the game right now. We'll be posting our impressions later today.

I... I don't know if I want it to come out anymore, though! What else will I compare games that are in development for years to now?!

I'm not really a huge fan of Duke Nukem, I loved the one on the PS1 though that had Versus Mode on it. I'd say it's about time this came out, I mean if it was planned to be released like 10 years ago...

I am a big fan. I would like to think years and years of wasted moments and money was just a marketing scheme.

More like duke nukem forever. I'll play it still, and see how it is. Most delayed games turn out to be crap most of the time. This game is way behind it's time.

Current RPG Making Projects:

Main projects: Eternia's Promise, demo out on rpgmaker.net

Desperation Of A New Era. Prolouges out, Part 1 out. Finally a game that I can

upload and complete.

Liberated Arms VX Ace Current Status: Cancelled. For now.

Dreamwalker VX Ace Current Status: Dead, unless it's restarted one day.

Story of Ligara: Dead. Again.

And my other thousand games...(not literally)

I'm not even interested in this game but damn, it's still a shock to see that it may finally be made. I guess we can now all start to wonder when Half-Life Episode 3 will come out.

Happy birthday btw UPRC.

I really like the earlier version that looked like Goldeneye-era graphics and stuff it looked like if Mike Judge made a first-person shooter

More like duke nukem forever.

that's exactly what it is already.

Anyways, I think Duke Nukem as a character is annoying and I didn't really understand what was so great about Duke 3D (I've only just played it recently, mind you. I didn't really experience it when it first came out) I can play the original Doom until the cows come home but Duke is pretty lackluster imo. This one looks like it's heavily influenced by Halo. From a control scheme I've seen, it looks like it even has the 2 weapon swap system.

Yeah, I'm very excited for this game as well. I just hope Gearbox knows what they're doing, but when I see shit like how Duke will only be able to carry two weapons at a time, I start worrying.

I still don't believe it.  They've been saying the game is coming out for over a decade, so why should we believe any differently now?

I still don't believe it.  They've been saying the game is coming out for over a decade, so why should we believe any differently now?

Because its essentially finished and fully playable. Its just not released. I imagine at this point all they have potentially to do it probably tweaks and bug fixes... maybe not IDK, but its playable. It'd be stupid if it wasn't released eventually at this point.
