Mail Order Monsters - C64
There's no point in watching the combat part of the game for more than a minute or so, but the little hub world and the monster creation/shop menus are perfect.

Porky's - Atari 2600
I still find this oddly menacing

Freedom! - Apple II
Never seen this one in the wild. An attempt at a followup to The Oregon Trail that was recalled and discontinued for obvious reasons. Dialog ends and the "action" begins around 3:30. I really wish kids in school had a deadpan bizarre simulation game like this for every subject.

CRISIS: Simulation Authoring System
Neat

Dirty Harry - NES
A claustrophobic, cacophonous nightmare. Endless, filthy cityscape infested with hoodlums and giant black snakes.

The Sentinel - Atari ST
If Captain Picard played a video game, it would look like this.

Galapagos - Mendel's Escape
The Game About Guiding A Low-Poly Bug Through A Bunch of Aggressive, Glowing Tron Shit

Everybody played Cubivore, right??????

The 64DD Is The Future of Home Computing:

Sim City 64

Doshin the Giant
Ok.

Doshin "2"
WHAT

Not game: the Mark Beyer "Thomas and Nardo" shorts from Liquid Televsion

I heard a rumor that Liquid Televsion stole a Nazi time machine and is planning a War against Adult Swim

ahahaha this is really good too. my favourite repulsive videogame slumworld is in Adventures Of Rad Gravity for the NES (which also has one of my favourite game musics ). At first it all seems like a fairly charming cartoonish pastiche of Buck Rogers space shit until the first level starts and you find yourself in this really awful disgusting factory town fighting off pimps and knifethrowing amputees with some kind of shiv thing

I get a similar feeling with like....regular forest areas in some older RPGs.  It just gives me this feeling of really like CORE traditional fantasy.  Like I mean nowadays it all feels like steampunk or anime or w/e stuff but some older RPGs you go into a forest and you think WIZARDS AND DRAGONS AND KNIGHTS AND FAIRIES MAGIC SPELLS FUCK YEAH.  I am too terrible at explaining this.

did you ever play Mr. Nutz for the SNES, because I think it did this kind of music really well! I can only find the Mega Drive version which isn't as good but the forest music is really good at this also the clouds section

It's not videogame music but on a kind of related note this is why I love Mort Garson's album Black Mass Lucifer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-O0HIHiGs0&feature=related this is the most unpleasant game i could possibly imagine

also doshin 2 apparantly made by cactus squid

This is a bit too cheesy of an example but in a way cheesy is what I like about it:

Both the music and the rest of it, it's just like...idk as traditional fantasy as you can get.  Also the music at 3:12.  It's very GOTTA GO TO MYSTERIOUS FOREST TO GET SPELLS MUST DEFEAT EVIL WIZARD.  It sounds so cheesy and lame but idk I really like this sort of thing and it's kind of childish fairytales but I don't see it much anymore.  Either it's too mixed with steampunk or animes or something else or it's too mature and not lighthearted enough.  Are there any recent games that have this sort of vibe in its purest sense???

haven't listened to that last song Vellfire but I think part of it is the chord resolve (might be making up words) in all fantasy jrpgs that was like da-dada da-da-da DUNNNNN

that Galapagos game has like Ulllillilia movement/physics gah help

I miss missing out on Liquid Television because I was like 9 when it happened and it was too adult or something. Can we have a new TV show that is just a dumping ground for ridiculous shit like that

<--- this kind of inspired that Twycross track. not sure if it was this level

<---- the description for this custom goldeneye level is amazing (Defeat EVIL Oddjob (youtube commenters: but Oddjob was Korean dfgddgds nerd rage))

this one is kind of weird too (gah wtf happens at 6:54 some THING just appears)

I mean the guys designing these are probably just the usual Matrix/Bullet Time/Counter Strike (like the guys who would make a Hong Kong/anime/matrix-y mod of Counter-Strike as the coolest thing they could possibly think of) is cool sort of culture and maybe it's just Goldeneye models/animations that make it so weird

shit I'm starting to think even XBOX had a 'feel'(I'm pretty sure it stops at PS2 though PS2 was like it had reached the point of sort of transparent vanilla graphics uncolored by weird graphics quirks) Not that it didn't have specific ways of doing graphics it just didn't have to feel like a PS2 game by this point? Whereas if you homebrewed on N64 it would probably instantly feel like an N64 game, like filming with real film instead of a home movie camera and it feels sort of like a scene from a movie

I still want to make either the Mortal Kombat sort of parody of "mature"-rated games back in the 90's, or do BIBLE RPG like not intentionally making any sort of statement but just like done from the perspective of a guy who is like 'hey this would make one hell of an RPG like miracles could be MAGIC command and roman soldiers could be random recurring bad guys you have to fight a million of + lucifer's helldemons or something and like the apostles would each have their own skills fisherman carpenterman and they could stand in for like the knight mage class'  like just someone giddy at the prospect that they have this untapped sort of RPG concept

I love the sound of all the NES tunes David Warhol worked on. I don't know if it's just because they remind me of the Maniac Mansion soundtrack.

WHILE GOOGLING, I found this, which leads to THIS. The top file is a recording of the original demo George Sanger made for the unused track that's in the Maniac Mansion .NSF.

(So this was meant to play at the endgame when you break into the lab and the self-destruct sequence is activated. In the actual game, the generic nuke alarm is used instead.)

I feel that discovering this has improved my quality of life.

ragnar is slavoj zizek irl. suddenly everything becomes clear

also not strictly a videogame thing but i think the ridiculous overdriven synth at the beginning is pretty much the exact aural representation of a Lisa Frank picture.

didnt alexross7 want to do pretty much this

Which biblical topic should this game include?

  • Genesis (Adam , Noah , Etc)
  • New Testament (Christian stuff)
  • Moses , the prince of Egypt

but yeah this is probably the one best reason anyone could have for making rpg maker games in terms of taking all the goofy preinstalled systems and using them to remake basically anything in rpg format. Like even using the preset database of like ALEX and POTIONS and stuff and just arbitrarily renaming them MOSES / HELLSWORD / DEMONMURDER bam you're done. rpg formalism!!

There are actually several Bible RPGs and I've even uploaded a video of one to youtube. It's called The You Testament and it's basically Grand Theft Auto in ancient Israel with cutscenes where Jesus teaches you magic spells. It was built on top of a wrestling game engine where it was possible to disembowel people and disfigure limbs and everything. Despite the absurd premise and execution, it's actually one of the best indie games I've ever played and I really enjoy it. I guess a large part of it has to do with how completely bizarre it is, but it's actually pretty fun running around Israel destroying peasants with Powerful Hebrew Spells.

But yeah, the Bible is an awesome setting for a game.

I need more. I need more unintelligible speech in games. This is fantastic.

unintelligible speech in games

Enix nailed it with Star Ocean on SNES.  The intro is like listening to a sci-fi program through a Burger King drive-thru speaker.  1:07 is great.  The woman sounds fairly calm and intelligible, but the captain sounds like Assy McGee on a Talkboy.
"WGHUERHE!"
"Mark 301 point 209 in Sector Gamma"

"INSFGHUMHE Sector? GET IHT ON THE SCHREEN!!!"

I swear that Carl Sagan was hired to narrate the following segment.
"People say...that the universe is a Star Ocean."

unintelligible speech in games rules:

Thayer's Quest (arcade, the console versions didn't have this as far as I know, you can see more of the speech here: )
Resident Evil (GBC)

Also even if it's intelligible there is something magical about early speech synthesis.  I think that's why I'm so in love with Sinistar ( ), it's amazing to be walking by a game cabinet and hear it shout "I HUNGER" at you.  I probably wouldn't have even played it if it weren't for this.  In fact they should have added in a motion sensor to specifically say it as you pass by.
