halloween-pumpkin-animated-gif11-source_SALTW HALLOWEEN GAMEJAM 2014halloween-pumpkin-animated-gif11-source_

hey you crusty old so and sos, it's me, yer old pal neuropath, bearing season's tidings!

'sbeen a while since there's been a game jam round these parts.   this old graveyard of a webforum's got a few cool spectres haunting it... this here ritual, colloquially known as "saltw game jam", is where we invoke these spirits of Outsider Game Development to rouse their dusty bones and get a cracking at the sweet art of generating cool, strange digital distraction once more!

if someone wants to pony up a material prize of some kind for this jam, I welcome their magnaminity with open arms, but in the meanwhile, whosever is voted pumpkin king/queen 2014 wins the high prize of my unyeilding, undying, undead respect! and probably that of some other people.  who can say!

think everyone reading this more or less knows the score.  7 days to make a game. the midnight of Halloween is your... DEADLINE... !!!  *skeleton shriek*

you may do whatever you like, using whatever tools you want, go nuts!  however, if you want a suggestion, or want to prove your flexibility, well... that's what the theme is for!

so, what's the theme you ask?

...

...

...

... to answer your question, let me quote esteemed salt alumnus stephen "thecattymights", from his charming, fun webzone:

What is a game? Professor M. Mouse of Texas, America claims that the word game denotes
"the historical process by which the term game has been characterised and understood".
Easy for you to say, Professor!!
Those of us with a more down-home approach to codifying the various aspects of a
nebulous and unbearable human condition prefer to go by a simpler definition, thus.

A game is some combination of the following indivisable elements:
- skeleton
- red key
- score thing
- magic door

If you see something that looks like a videogame but isn't, you should notify the Police.

HARD TO ARGUE WITH THAT REASONING!

so then, do you dare... to make GAME?

STAY TUNED TO FIND OUT!

Make game by Midnight of Halloween (Oct. 31)... or FACE CONSEQUENCE!

(feel free to either incorporate the above-listed elements of a Canon Game or not as you see fit.  we're all rebels in this part of cyberspace)

because I did 0 to advertize this jam beyond just posting a thread and posting in a thread a week prior, I like to think that this is a secret jam.  I wonder if anyone besides myself will do a thing...

Yes, wonder indeed. That is the very beauty of the mystery of game jam. Can you infer from this I'm implying voluntary participation? There is no way to actually find out. It is an enigmatic sort of anticipation laden with inherit uncertainty, and that's exactly how I like it.

those animations are fucking ace. they're MURDEROUSLY good... reminds me of soft&cuddly/gotohell for the spectrum... hope all is going well in the respective mental worlds of fellow salters and their developing game-spawn... or, lack thereof...!!!

yeah, the coding of what I think professional gamers call "core gameplay elements" took a lot longer than I expected and I maybe made some bad decisions that took a while to resolve, so I haven't started on the player-accessible spaces yet. hopin to release an incomplete version tonight or tomorrow, unless we just want to set a new deadline so we can all release the games at once.

Yeah, I meant for my participation to be a mystery right until the time I submit, but whatever I'm just saying it now since I still have yet to finish up the very last few tweaks to nail down that elusive "functioning core gameplay" aspect.

I'm fine for submitting whenever, I should have it playable tonight since I couldn't work on it today, but if everyone is submitting late regardless I'll just submit whenever and use the extra time to actually put forth some sort of tangible level design. (which I was planning on doing post-jam anyhow)

EDIT: Ok, submitting now. Sure do hope I'm not the only one. Don't give up hope folks! There is no such thing as late!

(Plus mine is pvp, so I'll be lucky if I find any two people with enough patience to test this game at the same time! Maybe if I keep updating it, I can entice some folks into thinking this game is something actually worth playing with a friend)

Arrite, tru deadline is Nov 4, by midnight in whatever timezone you live in.  Or not, I'm not the mom of you.  But that's my absolute limit, I intend to either show incomplete test game or full produkt by then.
