This game has been in beta since forever but recently (er, couple of months recently) the final version was released and holy crap is it good.

Mount & Blade is an open world sandbox action adventure roleplaying battle simulator game (man what a mouthful).  The best way to describe it is Sid Meier's Pirates with actual gameplay.  You start off creating your character and then you're thrust straight into this large world that's practically at war with itself.

You can do whatever you want; build an empire through trade, raid settlements, fuck over everyone else, play in tournaments, siege castles, etc.  As you grow in strength, you build up an army and renown.  As you increase in popularity and army size, you're given land and a castle to call your own.

Battles are the games highlight and I've never played a game with a system so simple but so intuitive.  Huge scale battles between multiple sides feel really cluttered and hectic and skill as well as leadership will see you through the day.  You use experience to level up and further improve your skills allowing you bigger armies or better fighting abilities.

Yeah, for 20$ this game is pretty amazing and if you like this kind of stuff then you have no excuse NOT TO get it.

Just a tiny chunk of the world map.  Every location has a real working economy that fluctuates based on ingame events like wars and raider activity.

Leading a troop of 3 guys to their death.  Surprisingly, we crush the enemy.

The end of Sir Galbladder.  I play the game on hard mode which saves when you exit and death is permanent.  In normal mode, you don't die; you get wounded, lose some equipment and money.

MODS
This game's modding community is ridiculous and there are mods that transform the game from being set in the crusades, to a realistic adaption of Britain in the 13th century, to a fantasy mod, Middle Earth, dungeon crawling traditional RPGs, and even a tax/economy sim.  Here's my list of "must haves" for beginners.

Battle Size Changer: Increases the size of battles.  Default game restricts battles to 100 troops both sides but this can max it out up to 1000.  I have set to 500 as I've never encountered an enemy troop of prodigious size and it would probably crash my computer.

Graphical Enhancement Pack: Makes the graphics not suck.  There's optional mods like HDR which make things look better.

Huge Vocal Pack: Lots of new sounds.  Makes the game sound more realistic.

Native Expansion: Upgrades the Native campaign (that's the default campaign M&B comes with) with added options and tweaked gameplay.

I bought this for something like $4 when it was 0.200 or something. Naff then, but great now. Combat ALWAYS ruled.

I find it a bit hard to get back into though. Essentially you end up doing the same thing over and over, and battles get a tad easy unless you go for OVERWHELMING ODDS :(

As far as fights go, I found a couple mods that balance things out.  They basically take into account speed as vanilla M&B makes everyone from a naked warrior to a full plate wearing two-sworder the same speed.  There's a bigger strategic element when you realize that it's near impossible to walk up even the smallest hill while wearing heavy armor.

This actually sounds really cool, and if I see it next time I'm in town I might pick it up.

Sounds good though.

Does this have an actual story yet? I played it when it was about .963 or something, and got bored by the lack of plot, although the combat did keep me entertained for a while.
Upon arriving the attending doctor could find no abnormal physical symptoms other than extremely dilated pupils. After spending several hours terrified that his body had been possessed by a demon, that his next door neighbor was a witch, and that his furniture was threatening him, Dr. Hofmann feared he had become completely insane.

I'm a little surprised not to see The Last Days mod listed in the first post, but then again I think they're still working on the 1.x port.

Also as soon as they fix the shitty siege mechanics I will start playing this again. Otherwise I think I've experienced pretty much all there is to experience as the game stands.

Granted there is quite a bit to experience.

Yeah, I loved San Andreas, but it was just such a black game. :x Like. Eh, I dunno, it was all so frickin' black, and I enjoyed the atmosphere of Vice City more.

It's still as pointless as always. 100 days to siege a town...but your army with run out of food around day 90 (if you FILL your inventory), and by day 80 you will have no troops left and be overrun by river pirates forest bandits.

Imagine what you could do with some mod making tools and some Flintstones MP3s.

Yeah, waiting a siege out was always pointless. You pretty much just have to take it head one which can be hard if you bring the wrong weapon. More then a few times I went into a siege and forgot I still had a lance and not a sword :(

But anyway it is a fun game, but it gets old. There is only so many times you can fight for pretty much nothing before it gets old. Yeah you can be called Lord a useless rock that does nothing.

Yeah, that's pretty much my problem with it. The combat is, as said, amazing. Best mounted combat in any game EVER, no exceptions.

But fuck, what are you even fighting for? Even the 'noble deeds' of overthrowing the evil King of Swadia feel pointless. And once you've done that it's just a case of TAKE OVER THE WORLD BECAUSE WE CAN....what's the point :( When you even have only one town/castle/village to your name it feels like you have everything you can possibly have.

The mods do improve on this a little, but as of yet none of them have added decent story to this game. I liked the one that added a custom castle that you could 'upgrade' like 30 times with different buildings and shit, and it would get invaded by people chasing you on the map. Don't think it ever got ported to retail version though :(

Nope, but I was wishing earlier it did...even just like taking control of a swadian knight with someone else would be a laugh.

There's a good reason I'm not playing it, and it's not because it's the best game.
It's because it isn't.

So... you got a link for the place I can find the other mods?

I might try this out next year, right now money is being put in gifts for the family.
A tool is a tool regardless. I mean if you suck, you suck, and not even the most perfect tool could save you. And if your damn good then even with the worst tool ever conceived you could chug out some high quality shit.

I've been playing this for a few years now, it's a great game. It's a bit glitchy and there's not really any story or anything but the combat is incredible and it's definitely a one more round kinda game. I need to try retail - is it worth picking up?
