Star Trek (new movie)

However this new one will probably have all that adorable stuff strangled to death in JJ Abrhams capable hands. Guy is a waste. I've watched the clips and trailers and while the whole thing is all SHAKY CAM...THIS AIN'T YOUR DADDY'S STAR TREK!!!, there's something in it that actually annoyed me and tells me this isn't MY Star Trek.
There's product placement in it. At a bar (in space), Lt. Uhura orders a Budweiser Classic along with a couple of Cardassian Sunrises. One of those two is out of place in a century where money and business was supposed to be obselete. Also, I haven't seen this but apparently it's been confirmed that there is a Nokia logo in the movie somewhere and that they were paid for it.
I guess Kirk will be all "Mr. Spock, can I use your Holo-Phone - I've run out of minutes on mine AGAIN" and Spock will respond "Captain, it is not logical for you to use such a sub-par service provider when brands like Nokia exist. Here, use my Nokia Holo-Phone Lite. I have unlimited minutes on weekends. It is the only logical course of action at this juncture" and then everyone in the audience will ejaculate into their popcorn.

but yeah it's not a retcon I heard which is weird and a lot of plot details I didn't pay attention to got leaked so there's loads to talk about here!

Also, apparently there's going to be 3 of these movies and JJ Abrhams had it in his contract that there should be no new series for at least two years after this movie which on the one hand might annoy people but it makes me go all "ohh...new star trek series on the way!" cos if I know it's comin then I am a-okay. I don't want it to have anything to do with these movies though, based on what I've seen (and what I've seen obviously isn't actually the movie), but it will have to have that SYNERGY otherwise all the kids will just go waaaahhhttt?
I dunno. I always thought it was kind of wacky Star Trek got away with saying that in the future religions and currency will be laughable, archaic concepts to us humans but I'll bet this movie abandons that stuff. Star Trek was never really a huge blockbuster movie, I mean it certainly was mainstream yeah but this movie seems to have made it's goal being to shred away all those cool things that made Star Trek better than what it usually was.

i wasn't! i was next gen and beyond, and while i can watch the older stuff i gotta admit it seems actually WORSE in every way. not just dated but bad acting etc.
like i'm wondering how many of us saying YEA THIS IS MY KIND OF LAME are referring in fact to the later kind of lame.

Did you know that the original pilot of the original series had a female first officer? The network told Roddenberry to fuck off with that thought, and they tried to get Uhura off the bridge as well but he wouldn't budge on that one apparently. The show is still crazily sexist, obviously, but seeing that he tried to put a woman as the No.2 made me like the guy a little more.
My favourite is TNG. I like DS9 quite alot as well, and I've never watched Voyager or Enterprise very much, just a couple episodes if it was late night and I was bored anyway.

I'm no trekky. Gonna watch this though cause I do like sci fi but it looks kinda dumb. JJ abrams doesn't fill me with confidence. This is one instance where product placement and awful stuff like that might make me half smile because I can just imagine the impotent rage it'll fill so many trekkies with

dude what the fuck why would a multimillion dollar movie based on fucking star trek NEED product placement?
jesus christ that means he's doing it EXCLUSIVELY for product placement money. ugh. that actually is pretty shit.

also I just went to Rotten Tomatoes and the reviewer snippet from a dude named Mark Ramsey who writes for "Movie Juice!" is:
The average Star Trek fan is fatter than a Mugatu. And I mean the kind of Mugatu that just ate a family of Mugatus. Hey, fella, is that your mouth or the Doomsday Machine?

also I agree I know they had to strike a balance and for its time Star Trek was insanely progressive but those skirts are so fucking dated to the extent I feel genuinely uncomfortable.
like now we are kind of closer to the future and I can't imagine it would look like this at places anymore. and questions that were salient as fuck before are now definitely just irrelevant (chekhov was a cold war reference but for us it's gonna be like "why would they even have russian accents this far in the future?) and in the case of any ep with a woman, horribly sexist.
